I don't understand the negative reviews of this place. I've been buying lunch here pretty routinely for the last few months, and have never had anything but a 100% positive experience.
Alan's sells the cheapest create-your-own salad in Midtown West. You can buy a large salad with 5 toppings for under $8. The same salad would run you upwards of $10 at any of the chain salad places in the neighborhood. The sandwiches are great also. A super basic sandwich ("meat and bread") costs under $5, whereas a special sandwich runs $7 or $8.
A lot of reviews mention rude or unfriendly staff. I've never had anything but friendly interactions with the staff behind the counter.
And as other reviewers have mentioned: Alan's has a discount for Fordham students, which is much appreciated.
Pro tip: it gets really crowded from 12-2 for lunch. Although even when it's most crowded, I'm still always able to get in and out in 10-15 minutes.
Alan's is a local gem. -

I got a bacon egg and cheese sandwich on a roll which was about $3.50 and I thought okay that's a decent price for a sandwich. I bring it to the office to eat it and my sandwich has literally one piece of bacon and one small egg in it. It barely even took up half the sandwich. It was basically mostly just bread.
I wish I had taken a picture but it was ridiculous. I would have gone back to complain if I wasn't at work. Will NOT be going back ever. -

I get lunch here from time to time, yesterday I got a sandwich that was absolutely delicious, so delicious that I need to Yelp it. I got a chicken cutlet with mozzarella cheese, roasted red peppers, avocado, balsamic and olive oil on a roll. Geez it was tastyyyyy! Expensive but good. They have many great things to choose from.

Does not have classic NYC sandwiches such as a chop cheese - do not go here if you are looking for a NYC deli experience. It's right across the street from a Fordham campus and is overpriced and for students who don't know better.

The #1 is my go-to. Super delicious, and extremely reasonably priced food- especially for the area. They have so many interesting sandwich combinations, and their salad bar has vast options. Not only is their food good, but they are very organized and have great customer service.
